The View from My Balcony

You may have noticed that I've been taking a lot of photos outside on my new stone balcony--I know this puts a lot of shadows in my shots, but I still think the human eye and brain react well to things shot in sunlight because we know what they're supposed to look like because that's how we see them. Anyway, I wanted to share something NEW that has cropped up in my balcony view: a Philly mural.

Here's a closeup of the mural that's being painted on the side of the CVS drugstore at which I shop:

It's not jewelry, but it IS creative and colorful, so I thought you'd like to see it.

Faceted Carnelian Briolettes

More of my recent bead haul: faceted carnelian briolettes. A briolette is a top-drilled (hole through the top, not the center) teardrop shape.

These briolettes are faceted, to catch the light and create more visual interest. They measure about 8mm from tip to bottom.

The rich, earthy orange will look great with some copper-y colored freshwater pearls. I think I want to make a necklace similar to my purple milk glass and pearl piece from last winter.

While they were expensive, I think I'm going to be able to use very few of them in a piece, which brings the price down a bit, assuming the thing sells!

Quartzes and More

Ok! Camera battery is charged up and working. And I took the first string of new beads I bought outside and this is the result:

The beads are crystal, rose quartz, smoky quartz (which is very popular right now) and amethyst.

The beads are all tumbled smooth and freeform, somewhere around an inch long apiece, give or take.

I think I might just string them together as is with little silver spacers between them, but I'll have to think about it and see where my mind goes.

Just Use Your Imagination...

I had WANTED to post some photos of some beads that I got this week but when I went home, and tried to take some shots in the beautiful sunshine we unexpectedly had, I couldn't even take a single one--the battery was dead. It is currently recharging...So instead, I'll have to tell you about them. I bought some beautiful warm, rich, deep orange-brown carnelian briolettes that I plan to mix with copper colored pearls, I bought large orange-gold crab fire agate rondelles and then I bought this beautiful mix of tumbled crystal, rose quartz, smoky quartz and amethyst beads. I think that for the last items, I can string them together with some simple silver spacers between them and add a silver toggle and have a beautiful necklace. For the crab fire agate, I might use gold-filled beads, which, while not inexpensive, will highlight the warmth of the stone more than silver would.

Double Millefiore

Ah, Spring. The flowers are blooming and so are my beads. I've been hard at work making millefiore glass bead bracelets. Red and green:

These puffed square beads are about 1 centimeter square. They are connected to one another with thick sterling silver wire.

Like all millefiore, they look beautiful when held up to the light.

The green beads have orange and white flowers, while the red beads have multi-colored flowers. The green is my favorite. It's funky.

Italian glass, and sterling silver with a substantial lobsterclaw clasp.

Price: $22.

More pictures next time. And yes, if you're curious: I threw that pot I'm using. I'm a double threat, people. (Well...I should stick to jewelry, if you couldn't already tell).

The More Things Change, The More Beads Stay the Same

You know how I always tell you that beads are very similar through time? And that most of the shapes, sizes and even colors of beads that we see today can be found around the world? To some extent that's because the Czech Republic is one of the best makers of glass beads, and those beads get shipped allover the world.

I was reading something interesting at CNN.com yesterday. Some 70,000 beads have been found underneath a Spanish Mission off the coast of Georgia (our Georgia, not Russia's Georgia!). Here's a shot:

They look to me to be glass and natural stone beads.

And I was reminded suddenly of a bead display I'd seen in one of my vendor's catalogs. Check it out:

See anything familiar? They look to be the same shape, size and even color! Once something works, I guess people really like to stick with it.

...And that's really all I have to say about that...

More Moo

Another assortment of my Moo Mini cards:

I think you can see the shadow of the screen on the cards, sorry!

Moo Minis

Some months ago, I ordered myself business cards from a company in England called Moo. They are adorable.

They're about the size of a stick of gum (Wrigleys, not Trident or Chicklets!) and printed on this beautiful, thick, matte card stock. I love them.

I threw some down on the radiator cover next to the window on one of the few recent days with sun, and snapped some shots. Obviously, I used my own photos to make them, which was really cool, I have to say. To be able to use your own work on your own cards is definitely neato-keen.

The size makes them unique; someone told me that he'd too easily lose something that small, and he might be right, but I love them. I take them everywhere I go, and leave one here and there now and then. More in the next blog post!

Awesome Notepad

I made this awesome new notepad at Shutterfly.com recently.

I used 3 of my own photos (blues and greens) and put them on a blue background, with green lettering for the business name and shop address.

It's a nice size for writing personal notes related to Jericas Jewelry, whether tucked in with an order, or listing a discount for my Etsy shop, or whatever the reason. I wanted to be sure to have something branded to use during my upcoming sale, so that no one would lose my information on just a forgettable scrap of paper.

LOVE LOVE LOVE it. I've made another one and then saved it to Shutterfly.com to print out later.

Another Etsy Mini

I kind of can't stop myself from making another Etsy mini!

Of course, some of the items in my shop I've had there for awhile, so the images may look familiar, but I've arranged them horizontally instead of vertically and altered the size of the individual photos as well. I think some are definitely new items though, so take a look.
