It's The Most...UCAL Time of the Year

Well, the season for the University City Arts League Holiday Sale is upon us again! I actually cannot believe it--this year, sometimes for better, but usually for worse, has moved very quickly. At times I felt that if I stood still for just a few minutes, I'd be able to feel the earth spinning. Maybe it was the fear that I'd find out I was right that stopped me from doing just that.

In any case, if you want to look through the wares or pick up a few holiday gifts, please come join me on Saturday night, 5 'til 9 pm. I may, or may not, be there the entire evening. I need to start paying attention to how quickly the earth is moving.

Or maybe the lake. Hmmn. I don't know. Are these things freshwater pearls?

Pearls

A few months ago, at Bead Fest in Valley Forge, PA, I bought this fantastic free-form pearl necklace.

It features white, blue and grey-green pearls, bezel set in thick sterling silver.

The pearls are suspended by a very substantial curb-link chain.

I love it. Especially the colors, which are some of my favorites. More pix to come.

My Turkey Girl

My beautiful girl, on Thanksgiving.

She has had her third operation this year, but is doing well. You can see a few of her incisions (she had 3 suspected tumors removed) here.

But she just got some delicious turkey made by Aunt G, so it's all good!

Out of Commission?

I may be out of commission for the next week or so. I hope not. I'm going to be using a bit of sick time at home, but that should go just fine. What is NOT going fine is how my website (built on Blogger's back) is interfacing with my laptop. I wish I could explain it. But I can't.

If you don't hear from me, I'm still alive.

Probably.

Pearl and Amethyst Bracelet

I spent some of yesterday making jewelry, and then met a friend and went bead shopping.

It's an addiction, Sir, as Carrie Bradshaw once said about smoking.

Anyway, one of the things on which I worked was this pearl, amethyst and sterling silver bracelet for a friend's 10 year old niece.

I say worked on because I think I'm going to have to restring it--it's probably too small. The sources I found online said that 6 inches (and mine is just over that) was the correct size for a 10 year old girl, but ... I don't know. If you have any advice at all as to sizing, please do let me know. I could use it.

No matter what, I do like the way it came out. It's very sweet and simple. The girl's birthstone is pearl, which was the inspiration for this design.

Beach Glass Long Dangle Earrings

I really need to finally post these for sale over at Etsy.

These earrings are one of the first pairs I made in the 3 Coins in the Fountain collection. They've always sold well, probably because the color combination is so strong.

In other news, I'm thinking of doing another fundraiser for an organization that could use a donation! Any suggestions? Let me know.

Chunky Ceramic Bead Bracelet

Oh my goodness--it's been a long time since I've been able to concentrate on blogging, let alone beading! My computer continues to freeze up at the thought of image-heavy applications, so I'm having to coax and beg over here.

This is a bracelet I made last year, actually. It's comprised of small black glass rounds, and 5 large flat, rectangular ceramic beads.

(And no, I did not make them!) The beads have been glazed in a cool aqua glaze, and then fired.

The bracelet clasps with a pewter diamond-shaped toggle clasp.

Price: $18 (but I'd be very willing to bargain!)

An Answer About Fire Agate

Remember the crab fire agate beads I bought a while ago? I was trying to find out what they were and guessed that they were actually carnelian? Well pin a gold star on me because it turns out I was right.

I just got the newest newsletter from the Gemological Institute of America and 'fire agate' is described this way:

A new type of treated chalcedony now flooding the market is being misrepresented as "fire agate." Fire agate is a brown chalcedony that displays iridescence, commanding a higher price than most chalcedonies. This new material, however, resembles carnelian or sard marked by a network of white lines.

The GIA Laboratory acquired several strands of beads fashioned from this material at the Tucson gem show and cut some in half to examine the nature of the white lines. All the beads were identified as chalcedony on the basis of their gemological properties. When the cut halves were examined with magnification, they showed fractures that for the most part penetrated to a similar depth from the polished surface, and the white lines followed these fractures exactly. Because the fractures were directly related to the surface of the beads, they must have been induced artificially (such as by quench crackling). The white lines were undoubtedly the result of some form of bleaching process that penetrated into the fractures.

It is readily apparent that this chalcedony is treated and is very different from fire agate. Dyed colors such as green and purple are also being seen.

The strands I bought are much prettier than the ones pictured here though. Mine are a bright golden orange, not a brown. Deelish!

Apologies and Australia

Everyone* has my apologies for such poor blog updating over the last 2 weeks or so. I've been having a lot of technical difficulties (my photo editor, my laptop, my blog software) and it's taken a lot out of me to keep trying to make things work.

Another thing I've been trying to make work? Finding out how much it would cost to send a pair of earrings to Australia. Someone contacted me at Etsy to ask that very question, and I think the answer is about $5 (or slightly less). Not bad, considering the earrings are only $10.

Crikey!
